Fathers who dare win
December 9th, 2008

One of my favourite books on fatherhood is Ian Grant’s “Fathers who dare win“. I first read this as a new dad when my first daughter Olivia was born.
I remember thinking at the time it was important to read something on fatherhood as I grew up without a dad. I didn’t really have any idea of how to be a dad as I didn’t have it modelled to me on a daily basis.
The thing I liked about Ian Grant’s book is that it is full of practical help, a lot of wisdom and includes a lot of humorous examples from his own parenting experience. It is also written in short chapters and has a summary of dot points at the start of each chapter as a primer.
The chapters touch on the following areas:
- Growing happy children
- Helping your child to build a good self esteem
- Affirming your child
- Developing your child’s character
- Communicating with your children
- Listening to your teenage daughter
- Building friendships with your sons
- Strategies for having fun
- Discipline for dads
- Staying in touch with your kids
This book is one that I have read several times over the years and I pull it out of my bookshelf every now and then to re-read one of the chapters. If you are a new dad or are a bit further along the journey I would encourage you to grab a copy and have a read.
God Bless,
Dave
