Communion: Adam's sin versus God's gift

Today I want to read a passage that explains why Jesus needed to come and die on the cross for our sin. The passage is Romans 5:12-19.

Romans 5:12,15-19 NLT

[12] When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. [15] But there is a great difference between Adam's sin and God's gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. [16] And the result of God's gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man's sin. For Adam's sin led to condemnation, but God's free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. [17] For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. [18] Yes, Adam's one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. [19] Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.

In this passage we see a number of things.

1. When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. The world was perfect until that time. But when sin entered the world everything changed for the worse.

2. Sin spread to everyone. Sin changed the way we all live. It brought selfishness and all that brings. It brought wars, earthquakes, famines, death. Most of all it brought separation from God.

3. This is why Jesus came. He was God’s gracious gift to save us. He came to die on the cross and pay the price for our sin. Now in Christ we have God’s wonderful grace and gift of righteousness. We have salvation.

4. So what Adam and his sin spoiled, Jesus’ death restored. Instead of sin, death and condemnation, we have peace, righteousness and right relationship with God.

So as we take the bread and the cup today to represent Jesus’ body and shed blood. Let us remember that Jesus’ death paid the price for our sin and made us right wth God. Both now and for all eternity.

Can I have the helpers come forward and I will pray.
